The Woodrow Wilson Bridge Trail opened for public use at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 6, 2009.

This 1.1 mile, 12-foot wide multi-use trail allows bikers and pedestrians to travel between Alexandria, Va. and Prince George’s County, Md.

The trail includes three “bump-out” areas with informational displays and telescopes for taking in unique views of Old Town Alexandria, National Harbor and Washington D.C. and is barrier separated from vehicular traffic traveling the bridge on the Inner Loop of the Capital Beltway (Interstate 95/495 South).

In Maryland, the trail ties into the Potomac Waterfront Community Park and larger Potomac Heritage Trail. Included in the Community Park is a landscaped deck over the Capital Beltway with more information displays and viewing locations. From there, the trail leads to National Harbor.

The Wilson Bridge Trail is one in series of multi-use trails included in the larger Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project to improve bicycle and pedestrian access throughout the area.  The status of these additional trails is as follows:

• OPENED IN 2007 : Major improvements to the Mount Vernon Trail through Alexandria were completed in late 2007, and include the Washington Street deck and additional off-street trails.
  
• OPENED LATE SPRING 2009 : A new trail from U.S. Route 1, south of the Beltway to the Washington Street deck, will improve access for walkers and cyclists.
  
• OPENING SPRING/SUMMER 2010 : A new trail starting on the east side of Telegraph Road at Huntington Avenue will enable walkers and cyclists to travel above the Beltway and connect to Eisenhower Avenue.
